Obstacles

i guess you don't really think of the obstacles that can face your work as a coach. i have recently been faced with one.

one of my english teachers has taken a sudden medical leave, that in many ways, could have been avoided. (thus, in an effort to be honest, i must share i am annoyed heavily with her for this reason). so what does this mean? well, according to my directors, a sub is not an option. so who does that leave? the english department head who is also the high school instructional coach and me, the middle school instructional coach and literacy specialist. any way you spin, it makes most sense for yours truly to jump into the classroom.

so what's the dilemma? well, in general, i am frustrated. because the one thing ive been most challenged with in working with this teacher is fostering that sense of commitment and passion in her role as a teacher, which is hard to "coach." if this surgery could have been scheduled anytime, why schedule it right before a season before what is an important time for your students (isat season)?!? also, how does one not know the recovery time after a surgery? again, all roads lead to the lack of considering the position the students are left in.

as a result, i am left with this dilemma. all roads point to me teaching these students for, what will apparently be, 2-4 weeks...leading up to isats. i want them to do well. its not fair that they are left at a disadvantage because of their teacher's lack of consideration. HOWEVER, this would mean that my coaching support would be severely impacted. i will not be able to provide the level of support i have been.

i wont have the flexibility to go see certain cohorts or visit all three cohorts...the types of support would also be limited...basically, i feel like i have to choose between my teachers and students.

in the end, here's how i feel: this sux.
