Data Analysis: Coaching Survey (Sent 12.27.12)
T1 Survey:
Sent 9/21/12
Response received: 10/8/12
How do you feel you have grown as an educator so far this
school year?
·
"I have a deeper understanding of the
philosophy and classroom structures of balanced literacy.
·
I am much clearer about specific strategies and
skills that good readers need/use.
·
I have had many more experiences that need
unpacking/reflection (re: classroom management and relationship with students),
so I have a more nuanced and complicated understanding of my own role and my
options.”
How have I served you as a coach?
·
"You have been very supportive and
enthusiastic. You have served as a sounding board, which has been invaluable as
a new teacher. You have helped me process challenging moments in the classroom.
You have helped me look at my areas of weakness and have helped me plan
concretely how to improve those areas.
How helpful have our coaching sessions (observations, debrief,
co-planning, analyzing student work, co-teaching) been for you and your
practice?
5
How could I better support you and your practice?
·
"I'm always looking for help with
curriculum--both scope and sequence development, and materials. Moving forward
(and starting guided reading), it'd be great to share articles or other reading
materials.
·
If there's every any way for you to support us
working as a middle school team--common planning for the English teachers--that
would be something I'd find very valuable, too.
·
Thank you for all that you do! I feel very
privileged and grateful for your support.
Initial Coaching Survey Analysis
Administered over Winter Break (so teachers have time to
complete and not feel rushed; questions were that which teachers answered using
a number scale, again to eliminate amount of time that had to be used to
complete it). Technically, this was the second survey I had administered. First
one was during fall break when I wanted to get feedback during T1 on their
thoughts on coaching. Only 2/5 people completed the survey. Having learned from
that, this new survey, sent only to the 3 teachers who are participating in the
action research, was much less time consuming, quantifiable, yet on the
downside, allowed little room to hear from teachers.
Questions asked:
Have you received coaching support prior to your work with
Sonia Wang? (Drop down: Yes, formall, Yes, informally, no)
How would you rate your coaching experience thus far over the
first two trimesters at UCW? (Scale: 0-5/Not helpful at all-Very helpful)
Which element of coaching support has been most helpful to
your profession? (Informal
Obs/Debrief, Co-planing, co-teaching, modeling instruction, debrief reflection
sessions, other)

(I’m actually surprised by this data, partly because I think
it takes a lot for an adult to choose “very helpful” as opposed to just
helpful. I feel like more people are inclined to choose a 4 than just go to the
5. So it makes me feel pretty pleased that the number look like this.)
What does it show me?
With regards to the first question, it informs me that my
teachers definitely find coaching HELPFUL. I wonder if they also find it
valuable or if they see helpful and valuable as synonymous things. It is
informative to see from this that no one finds it a waste of time or an added
responsibility.
Looking at the scores that the components of coaching were
given, I find it very interesting that the “Debrief Reflection Sessions”
received a ‘5‘ from every teacher. I would be super interested to know what is
the reason that this is something that is felt to be very helpful. I wonder if
it has to do with the time to talk
through their reflections on instruction, having me as a sounding board, being able to problem
solve practical steps to issues they see…
Other aspects that seem to be helpful (in the sense that they
received 2 5’s and 1 4) were informal observations and co-planning.
In response to the question: “Is there anything that your
coach can do to improve your coaching experience?”
·
Sharing curriculum/unit plans has been very
helpful. Thanks!
·
Continue to assist in planning and lesson
planning, connection to assessments
·
I would like for more opportunity to do
co-teaching.
All three responses indicate a continuation of things that have been put
in place or adding in more supports. Nothing indicates a desire to minimize the
things we are doing together as coach/teacher.
