i luv my kids (10.24.11)
today (and really all the days lately) my kids have been amazing...
the greatest thing is the fact that every student is READING to the extent that they can/will...there is not a single students who doesn't- even J and B....it's just really cool how students are all getting into their novels and reading independently.
today in english, D'Q says "ms. wang, what's so cool is that last year they'd always yell at us and we'd get in trouble for talking, but you're not. you're telling us that our voice matters, that we should talk." (we were talking about preparing for our class discussion on Monster, our current class novel.) regardless of it, this was a moment that as a teacher, i had to stop and smile. and what's even more wonderful is that i am also able to carry out guided reading and just support my students.
the other best sight is during independent reading, when i see K and Iz reading their books, camped out underneath the tables, and immersed in their novels, jotting RTs. i love seeing the kids honestly loving their reading time and as i conference, we're able to really check in about what is happening in their novels and their thinking. for some students, we're at the place where they are not deciding what they want to focus on as they read (vs. me assigning something for them to work on).
i feel empowered by my students.
