8B
so i decided to go with 8B...
for a few reasons. i feel like within this cohort there is a lot of diversity.
1. Ability - though this is not my class with students who have IEPs, there are students who have entered the 8th grade at 3rd grade reading levels up to high school reading levels. with regards to writing, i have students who are able to write with emotion and with a quality that reveals an honesty in their writing. At the same time, i have students in this cohort who remain at a very straightforward and surface level with their writing, unable to develop their ideas and think beyond what might be considered "right or wrong." The final layer for the writing is the fact that for many of my students, writing in a way that is fluent and for different purposes is still a struggle.
2. Socioemotional - this cohort houses my students who are very volatile. they have and are experiencing an immense amount of social and emotional situations, including abrupt deaths, depression, isolation (feeling abandoned), teen pregnancy, overbearing parents. the way my students internalize these situations differ; some students act out, others resort to emotional episodes, some meet with our school social worker, others turn insular.
3. Enthusiasm - this cohort is not necessarily the most vocal and open, but there is a trust within our classroom community that has been established where i feel like as we venture into exploring and cultivating our voice students will be (hopefully) able and willing to open up and step up.
